Bitcoin Kampala is building a grassroots Bitcoin circular economy in Uganda, centered around Makerere University—Uganda’s largest academic institution—and extending support to communities like the Orphans of Uganda in Bugiri. What began as a response to a tweet by Bitcoin Ekasi, calling for circular economies across Africa, has grown into a thriving initiative combining education, commerce, and social good.
Since July 2023, Bitcoin Kampala has onboarded vendors, schools, students, and orphanages to use Bitcoin as a real medium of exchange. At Makerere University, students can now pay tuition and purchase supplies in Bitcoin, while merchants around campus participate in a growing Bitcoin economy.
Programs like “Fruits and Eggs for Sats” introduce children to Bitcoin while ensuring proper nutrition. Beyond financial literacy, Bitcoin Kampala has secured land for farming, boosting food security and sustainability for orphans in Bugiri.
Thanks to Bitcoin donations, the project has funded beds, desks, school materials, clean water systems, and renewable energy infrastructure. As adoption expands and partnerships grow, Bitcoin Kampala is proving that Bitcoin can be a tool for empowerment, financial sovereignty, and transformative impact across Uganda.
The Bitcoin Kampala - Uganda was founded in 2021 by Brindon Mwiine, inspired by The original Bitcoin Beach experiment from El Salvador, Praia Bitcoin Brazil and Bitcoin Ekasi. It has 05~10 team members, an estimated 100~200 bitcoiners and 11~20 merchants accepting Bitcoin, making 01~49 daily transactions.

Bitcoin Kampala Uganda was born out of the inspiration of Bitcoin Ekasi and Bitcoin Beach Brazil. A month prior to the BTC Prague 2023 conference, Bitcoin Ekasi issued a tweet challenging anyone who believed they could build a Bitcoin circular economy, drawing from the success of Bitcoin Beach in El Salvador. The offer was a conference ticket for BTC Prague, providing an opportunity for the right person to learn how to create a circular economy in their local community.
Through a Twitter community poll, Brindon Mwiine B emerged as the winner, demonstrating his previous efforts in organising local Bitcoin meetups, educating the community about Bitcoin, and fostering adoption. He was awarded the conference ticket and embarked on a fundraising journey, utilising Geyser Fund, to cover his expenses for the trip to Prague. Against all odds, he succeeded in raising the necessary funds, getting a late visa and made it to the conference on the morning of the appointed day.
Attending BTC Prague and immersing himself in the circular economies’ booth there proved invaluable. The knowledge and guidance he gained, particularly from the creators of Bitcoin Ekasi in South Africa and Bitcoin Beach Brazil, made the establishment of Bitcoin Kampala Uganda an inevitable and exciting endeavour.
Under the leadership of Brindon Mwiine, Bitcoin Kampala has significantly improved the lives of the orphaned children in Bugiri, providing essentials such as consistent schooling, daily nutritious meals, and the recurring “Fruits for Sats” program. At Makerere University, Bitcoin Kampala has established a thriving Bitcoin-friendly ecosystem, involving students, local vendors, and community stakeholders.
The project has conducted over 8 Trezor Academy classes around Kampala and ensured mentorship and growth among active community members. Women's engagement in the local Bitcoin scene has greatly improved thanks to education initiatives by Bitcoin Dada, The Core, and now the School of Satoshi.
Major achievements include:
Educational Empowerment: Enabled orphaned children to regularly attend school, provided uniforms and materials, and created the foundation for the Starlight School project.
Basic Needs Provision: Purchased 30 triple-layer beds, 90 mattresses, and 180 bedsheets for the orphanage.
Community Initiatives: Onboarded vendors around Makerere University and launched Juicy B and Gorilla Sats to model Bitcoin adoption in businesses.
Health and Nutrition: Improved diets through “Fruits for Sats” and “Sugar Free Juice” programs in Bugiri and Makerere.
Self-Sustainability: Enabled crowdfunding campaigns for the orphanage and construction of a permanent home.
Beyond Uganda: Helped launch Bitcoin Arusha in Tanzania, empowering a dancing community through Bitcoin.
As Bitcoin Kampala – Makerere enters a new phase, the core goal is to nurture a generation of Bitcoin ambassadors who will promote financial sovereignty and Bitcoin adoption across Uganda.
Our future plans include:
School of Satoshi: Expand structured education and training.
Ambassador Program: Equip students to promote Bitcoin adoption.

I hear the drums from Cape to Cairo,
Voices rising under the sun,
From the dust we build tomorrow,
The chain is broken, the journey’s begun.
No masters, no permission,
We hold our own ignition,
The fire of a generation,
Africa’s Bitcoin nation.
[Chorus]
I love Africa — heart of gold,
Africa is the home of Bitcoin untold,
We rise, we shine, we’re finally free,
Twelve magic words — our destiny.
Mothers teach, children learn,
Freedom’s flame will always burn.
With every block, a story’s made,
A trustless dream that won’t decay.
“Freedom is not given, it’s taken,
Not promised, but awakened.
Our power is not in kings or banks,
But in hearts that give thanks.”
[Chorus]
I love Africa — heart of gold,
Africa is the home of Bitcoin untold,
We rise, we shine, we’re finally free,
Twelve magic words — our destiny.
You don’t need permission, just be,
Create a wallet and you are free.
Transact with love, from sea to sea,
Africa — you are free, eternally.

Song Description – “Africa, You Are Free”
Written by Fernando Motolese — Produced on Suno
“Africa, You Are Free” is a timeless anthem of empowerment, unity, and technological awakening. Written by Fernando Motolese and produced on Suno, the song captures the spirit of a continent rising — from struggle to sovereignty — with Bitcoin as a symbol of freedom. Blending Afrobeat, amapiano, and soulful world music, it carries the ancestral heartbeat of Africa while embracing the digital revolution shaping its future.
Through poetic verses and uplifting choruses, the song honors Nelson Mandela’s legacy and the resilience of African people. It speaks of hope, education, and the power of self-custody — reminding listeners that freedom needs no permission. “Twelve magic words” become a mantra for a generation reclaiming control over their destiny.
With deep percussion, vibrant harmonies, and an emotional crescendo, “Africa, You Are Free” transcends music — it becomes a movement. It invites every listener to believe in a borderless future where love, technology, and community converge. This is not just a song to be heard; it is a call to be felt — a hymn for Africa and the global Bitcoin revolution.
