Bitcoin was born to empower the unbanked and shift financial control from centralized authorities to individuals. Turning that promise into reality demands collective effort, especially when governments and incumbent institutions are reluctant to relent...
That spirit has reached Jericoacoara, a scenic village on the west coast of Ceará, Brazil, nestled within a national park 300 km from Fortaleza. Despite its popularity as a premier tourist destination, the town has no ATMs, but, now, we have Bitcoin.
Since 2021, Praia Bitcoin kown as Bitcoin Beach Brazil has focused on turning Bitcoin into a practical medium of exchange: collaborating with developers, building and stress-testing tools, operating full nodes, and guiding communities around the world to build lasting circular economies.
Praia Bitcoin Sunset Due to recent changes to Bitcoin's source code that transformed the Bitcoin blockchain into a hosting database for arbitrary data—representing countless social and legal risks for Bitcoin circular economy founders and node operators— we have decided to cease operations as a direct signal to @bitcoincoreorg developers that these changes are unacceptable.
The websites will remain operational throughout 2026 as historical records and resources, but there are no further plans to continue the Confederation's, Bitcoinize's or Praia Bitcoin's endeavors. Since these protocol changes cannot be reversed, the risks to node operators and community founders will persist indefinitely.
We will be closing our community center until April 2026, and all donations collected will be transferred to active projects on @GeyserFund and other worthy initiatives in the Bitcoin circular economy space, mainly @orphansofuganda

₿₿₿ - Established lead organization; Developed financial infrastructure.
Praia Bitcoin's journey began with the vision of our founder, Fernando Motolese, who provided an initial donation of 0.02 BTC to support local workers, artisans, fishermen, and street artists in Jericoacoara. This helped establish both Lightning and On-Chain wallets, sparking a financial revolution in the community.
Since then, our crowdfunding campaign has received over 1,300 donations, totaling 5.99 BTC. This overwhelming support allowed us to establish Brazil’s first Lightning service provider, a crucial step toward democratizing Bitcoin access and usage.
Expanding operations and services offered by the our local Lightning Service Provider
Continuing to promote financial self-management and Bitcoin education in the community.
Hosting cultural events and programs to engage the local community.
Collaborating with other Bitcoin initiatives and community projects.
I visited Jericoacoara, Northern Brazil, in February 2023 for the amazing Bitcoin Carnaval.
Fernando and his team organized a fantastic conference that brought the community together.
During my trip, I used Bitcoin at over 10 different places. I bought shorts, sunglasses, acai bowls, milanesa, all paid with sats!
They even run an awesome initiative called Fruits for Sats.
The Bitcoin community here is strong and inspiring!
