Arnhem Bitcoinstad - Netherlands

Arnhem Bitcoincity began in May 2014 when three Bitcoin enthusiasts decided to create a place where they could spend their bitcoins locally. They started by convincing 15 local bars and restaurants to accept Bitcoin, and the initiative has expanded since then, with more and more merchants adopting Bitcoin payments.

• May 28th, 2014: Official launch of Arnhem Bitcoincity with 15 merchants accepting Bitcoin.

• Expansion: A continuous increase in the number of merchants accepting Bitcoin over time.

• Meetups: Regularly organizing meetups for enthusiasts and newcomers, focusing on discussion, education and social engagement.

• BitKassa Integration: Used BitKassa to process Bitcoin payments, though that has now stopped due to regulatory pressures (MiCAR).

• Adopting Bitcoin Arnhem Conference: Hosted the conference in May 2024 to celebrate the 10th anniversary of Arnhem Bitcoinstad, resulting in a peak in Bitcoin payments for that month.

• Online Resources: Provide a website (ArnhemBitcoinstad.nl) with information about the project, including a map of participating merchants.

• Ongoing Activities:

  • Continue to organize regular meetups for the Bitcoin community.

  • Encourage more merchants to accept Bitcoin.

  • Promote awareness and adoption of Bitcoin.

• Continue to provide education about the possibilities of Bitcoin.

• Future Goals:

  • To continue to make Bitcoin a part of everyday life for locals in Arnhem.

  • To develop Bitcoin as an alternative financial system.
